Jim Marshall, rocks legendary photographer, died in his sleep on March 24, 2010. Few people probably knew his name but rock music fans knew his photographs. Jim Marshall was at the Beatles last full concert at Candlestick Park in 1966, at Woodstock in 1969, and was there when Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and he took his camera and documented these historic rock music moments for us all to see.

Some of his famous photographs included Johnny Cash giving the finger to the camera, the Who tearing the stage apart at Woodstock while the sun was rising, and a young Bob Dylan kicking a tire down the street. His subjects were the who’s who in rock music which included the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, John Coltrane, Janis Joplin and Miles Davis.

Aaron Zych, a manager at the Morrison Hotel Galleries, confirmed Jim Marshall’s death in New York City on Wednesday. Jim Marshall was scheduled to appear at a reception Wednesday night to promote his new book with celebrity photographer Timothy White. He apparently died in his sleep sometime overnight while alone in his New York hotel room, Zych said. Jim Marshall was 74 years old and the cause of death was not immediately known.
