NEENAH — Camera crews for MTV created a backlash this week among Neenah High School students who said the cable channel was misrepresenting their school during the filming of a documentary on Challenge Day.
Student Justine Braun said MTV exaggerated stereotypes and cliques to dramatize the effects of Challenge Day, a workshop designed to build connections and empathy among students.
"A lot of the students have been told what to say by MTV and what groups they fall under and how they need to portray that group," Braun said. "They have been given specific lines to say. We're bothered by that."
Student Brandon Green said a film crew came to an Eco Club meeting and scripted how they should act.
"They were telling us what to say," Green said. "I feel they are changing how we are so it will be more heart wrenching than it actually is."

"Many of us were surprised to find film crews roaming the halls, taping our normal lives," Bezier said. "There was certainly some animosity about that."
Braun said the camera crews were invasive and distracted from learning.
