WOMEN have been turned on to becoming witches after watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

They are copying their screen idols and shunning traditional churches to get into the secret world of witchcraft, called Wicca, say angry Christian groups.

The wannabe witches are under the spell of hit show Buffy, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, 31, as well as Sabrina The Teenage Witch with Melissa Joan Hart, 32.

One young Wiccan, student Chelsea Simpson, 18, from Manchester, said: “Girls like Buffy and Sabrina are great role models.

“They show witches can be a force for good, so it’s no wonder people are trying witchcraft. It’s an exciting way of life.”

A new survey shows 50,000 women a year have been leaving the church over the past two decades. Many have been drawn into the Wiccan world of spells and potions.

One attraction is that women can rise up quickly to become chief witches and priestesses, says the author of the study Dr Kristin Aune, a sociologist at the University of Derby.

There are more than 700,000 internet sites for teenage witches. The Pagan Federation reports hundreds of inquiries every week from young girls, some as young as 13.

Still, anything that ticks off Christian religious groups --

Commissioner Anabell Brumford: Do you realize that because of you this city is being overrun by baboons?
Lt. Frank Drebin: Well, isn't that the fault of the voters?

Alright, Buffy I can understand, even if it wasn't actually Buffy doing any of the witchcrafty stuff.

But Sabrina? SERIOUSLY?! I only watched that show once or twice, and I was always rooting for the bad guys... what a vapid little twit. At least Willow was clever.
