ATLANTA – U.S. births fell in 2008, probably because of the recession, updated government figures confirm. The one exception to the trend was the birth rate among women in their 40s, who perhaps felt they didn't have the luxury of waiting for better economic times.

The birth rate for women in their early 40s rose a surprising 4 percent over the previous year, reaching its highest mark since 1967. The rate for women in their late 40s also rose, slightly.

But birth rates fell for teen mothers, as well as women in their 20s and 30s.

none of that seems to be bad news.

I hope teens don't have more kids in economic booms, though...

Have you caught any of this MTV show called "16 and Pregnant"? My wife and I have seen a few short snips of it, but we can't bear to watch more than a few minutes. It really infuriates me when I think of couples who desperately want to have kids, and then you see some high schooler complaining that taking care of her twin babies means she is going to miss homecoming. :banghead:

It is not wanting to wait for better times or just being really ready at 40? Lots of moms here watch that show with their daughters. It's opened a lot of conversation about sex, relationships and responsibility. As an adult it is hard to watch teens go on.
