Stay married and save the planet

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Staying married is better for the planet because divorce leads the newly single to live more wasteful lifestyles, an Australian lawmaker said Tuesday.

Senator Steve Fielding told a Senate hearing in the Australian capital Canberra that divorce only made climate change worse.

When couples separated, they needed more rooms, more electricity and more water. This increased their carbon footprint, Australian Associated Press (AAP) quoted Fielding as telling the hearing on environmental issues.

"We understand that there is a social problem (with divorce), but now we're seeing there is also environmental impact as well on the footprint," AAP quoted him as saying.

Such a "resource-inefficient lifestyle" meant it would be better for the planet if couples stayed married, he said.

really? I guess I could disagree with that on this reason alone. I know married folks that waste more than the average single person(s), just in lifestyle alone. Whats the difference when you have a 4000 square foot home or two 1300 sqaure foot homes. sorry about the typos.

It doesn't work if you have a marriage like mine. On Thursday I flew from Switzerland to England and Mr DMB stayed in Switzerland. Then today he flew to the Netherlands. Tomorrow he will join me in England and we shall spend 3 nights under the same roofs (not staying in just one place). Then on Wednesday he flies back to Switzerland and then drives to southern France. On Thursday I fly to Switzerland...

Over a month it averages out to look a bit better, but we're often apart. We have been together for 39 years and we have always had separations. We are so used to it that we quite like it.
