Priests debate religion in schools at hearing

DRUMMONDVILLE - The question of religion in Quebec schools was raised time and again yesterday during the Bouchard-Taylor commission's swing through one of province's most Roman Catholic regions, the Centre-du-Quebec.

Lionel Emard, a Catholic priest in three Yamaska parishes, said he favours the new "neutral" curriculum on religious cultures and ethics that will replace the option of faith-based instruction in public schools next year.

Learning about other religions, especially Islam, will encourage children to be open-minded, said Emard, who added he recently finished reading the

"That's the role of the state, to get people to open up," he told the commission's co-chairmen, Gerard Bouchard and Charles Taylor.

"There's an enormous amount of nostalgia for Christianity in Quebec," Taylor remarked.

"It's because people have failed to pass on their moral values to the next generation," Emard said. "They're nostalgic for a bygone era when those values were transmitted."
