Hex and the boy went to the science museum tonight while I was working, and they apparently saw eyelash worms there.

Which apparently, 98% of adults have.

gah!

But, they're digestive system is so refined they don't poop--- so they eat oil adn dead skin, but don't give us waste... they are good, right?

RIGHT?

I should NOT be grossed out by them, right?

RIGHT?

But they may do what sea anemones and jellyfish and the like do -- spit out what they've finished digesting. Sea anemones and jellyfish and the like don't have a very fancy digestive system; it's mostly a sort-of stomach.

Mebe... What I've read is that they don't produce waste... Which makes them ok...

I'm going to have trouble sleeping tonight...

:confused2:

Here's another possibility.

Our blood supplies our body cells with simple food molecules -- simple sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, etc. -- which they use for raw materials or which they extract energy from. It these worms could soak up such nutrients, they will not need to do much digestion, if any at all. The no-digestion-needed strategy works for some parasitic worms; tapeworms have no digestive system and they absorb through their skins the nutrients that they live off of.

I'm going to go with the 'they help prevent infection by cleaning follicles' thought... and try to sleep...

'night!

I gotta tell ya...things like this are my cuppa tea! I love learning about parasites and other creepy critters. I was in heaven at the vet clinic. I was exclusively large animal and they have lots of kooties!
I've known about the eyelash kooties for years. Cool huh????
:D

In my invert zoo class we got to look at ours. That are tough to find because to dig them out you gotta dig HARD. My eye was red the rest of class. I was the only person to find theirs!

Hex, this is the class that had the large microscope I was talking about. Turns out it is large because its special in some way and I cant remember how.

I doubt we'd be alive if we didn't have any parasites at all in and on our body.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demodex

Quote:
The mites can leave the hair follicles and slowly walk around on the skin, at a speed of about 8–16 cm/hour, especially at night; they try to avoid light.[1]

Female Demodex folliculorum are somewhat shorter and rounder than males. The total lifespan of a Demodex mite is several weeks. Both male and female Demodex mites have a genital opening, and fertilization is internal.[2] Mating takes place in the follicle opening, and eggs are laid inside the hair follicles or sebaceous glands. The six-legged larvae hatch after 3-4 days, and it takes about seven days for the larvae to develop into adults. The dead mites decompose inside the hair follicles or sebaceous glands.

Harmless or not, I'm grossed out.

I try to think of them as little pets who keep my skin clean.

When I think of them at all...

Everett--- my eye itches...

I wonder if they live in men's beards as well? Or is it just eyes? nygg? Goldie?

I may be wrong, but I think these particular critters are eyelash exclusives.

Now... Ticks? Maggots? Lice? Scabbies? Parasitic worms? Liver Flukes? Ooooooooooooooo! Let's TALK!
