Native Americans did not hunt bison for the sole purpose of meat and hides and bones as tools or bone beads, each tribe only took a few per year so they could disguise themselves under a hide while trying to sneak up and milk a bison cow.

True or False

stop laughing.

Ummm ...

False (with a 'where the heck did someone come up with that?' thrown in for good measure.)

I mean ... If they were just going for milk, then why did they run so many off cliffs and produce butchering sites? Why did they do the same with washes or gullies? (ie - run the bison along the streambed that's gradually getting deeper and thinner until they hit a bottleneck and you can kill them easily)

There's lots of evidence for uses for skins (clothing, shelter, implements (of warfare and ritual), etc.) as well as bones and horns. Getting those pretty much indicates killing the bison, not milking it.

Granted, there are accounts of strategically using the bison head/skin camouflage to get close to or scare a herd, but that's for hunting purposes.

And, dietary requirements of a tribal group (of oh, say, 200 or more) on the great plains which are mostly, what, grass, that people eat so much of on a regular basis, yeah. Only a couple of pounds a year is all they'd need? Pshaw! They ate lots of meat, it's what helped to get them the nutrients they needed to stay healthy!

I can get you citations if you'd like, but that's just off the top of my head ...

Wasn't there little to no non human milk consumption by the natives, anyway?

Well, yeah, there is that too.

The incidence of lactose intolerance in Native American populations is ~95%.

Not such a good strategy if only really young kids are getting the milk the dangerous way ...

See it only stands to reason that the cows come to their milk in the spring when they calve...so what were they to eat to sustain themselves from fall through spring...and they calve in some of the nastiest weather Spring blizzards etc. who is gonna go sneaking along to milk a buffalo in the freezing ass cold snow hip high..... if it were me I would go for the stew in my nice warm teepee.

I never thought to ask my friend dave, I dont get to see him much, he is native and surely he must know.
