Quote:
Top Vatican officials — including the future Pope Benedict XVI — did not defrock a priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys, even though several American bishops repeatedly warned them that failure to act on the matter could embarrass the church, according to church files newly unearthed as part of a lawsuit.

The internal correspondence from bishops in Wisconsin directly to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope, shows that while church officials tussled over whether the priest should be dismissed, their highest priority was protecting the church from scandal.

Quote:
Father Murphy not only was never tried or disciplined by the church’s own justice system, but also got a pass from the police and prosecutors who ignored reports from his victims, according to the documents and interviews with victims. Three successive archbishops in Wisconsin were told that Father Murphy was sexually abusing children, the documents show, but never reported it to criminal or civil authorities.

I believe this falls under the category of "raise your hand if you're shocked. Anyone. Anyone?"

Unfortunately.

Sex abuse scandal in US, Italy taints papacy

Quote:
The two cases are the latest in a burgeoning abuse scandal on both sides of the Atlantic that now threatens to tarnish the papacy itself. The office charged with disciplining clergy was long led by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, and a church prosecution in the Wisconsin case was stopped after an appeal to Ratzinger.

The Vatican strongly defended Benedict on Thursday and denounced what it said was a concerted campaign to smear him and his aides for a problem that Rome insists is not unique to the Catholic Church.

It is surely embarrassing for the Catholic church to have Cardinal Ratzinger's fingerprints all over the latest mess. But "everybody does it" isn't a valid excuse. All that means is that the Boy Scouts and the Scientologists and Protestant groups that have covered up sexual abuse also need to be called to the carpet.

A long time ago when the abuse scandal in the U.S. first became big news, on a forum far, far away, I talked with a staunch Catholic about it. The mentality was that something is only a "scandal" if it becomes publicly known. "To protect the church from scandal", then, meant not preventing priests from diddling boys, but rather preventing the boys from taking it public.

Legionaries religious order: sorry for sex abuse

Quote:
VATICAN CITY – A conservative religious order favored by Pope John Paul II is apologizing to the victims of sexual abuse by its founder.

Leaders of the Legionaries of Christ said in a statement on its Web site Friday that at first they couldn't believe the accusations against the late Mexican prelate Marcial Maciel, including molestation of seminarians and that he had a long relationship with a woman and fathered a daughter with her.

"Sorry. Our bad."

Catholics find ties to the church tested by crisis

By VANESSA GERA, Associated Press Writer – Tue Mar 30, 6:30 am ET

Quote:
WARSAW, Poland – An Austrian priest avoids mention of Pope Benedict XVI in his Masses. A Philadelphia woman stops going to confession, saying she now sees priests as more flawed than herself. British protesters call for the pontiff to resign.

As the faithful fill churches this Holy Week, many Roman Catholics around the world are finding their relationship to the church painfully tested by new revelations of clerical abuse and suggestions Benedict himself may have helped cover up cases in Germany and the U.S.

There are fears that for those whose commitment is already wavering, the scandal could be the final blow, and a growing chorus is clamoring for the church to embrace full transparency, take a hard line against pedophiles, and reconsider the rule of priestly celibacy.

"There's too many victims, and too much lying from the church about what really happened," said Martin Sherlock, a Catholic newspaper vendor in Dublin, Ireland.

Pope sees sex scandal as test; bishops urge reform

By NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press Writer

Quote:
VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI sees the priestly sex scandal as a "test for him and the church," his spokesman says, as bishops around Europe used Holy Week's solemn call for penitence to pledge transparency in dealing with the abuse of children.

But amid such signs of humility, a senior cleric also mounted a sharp counterattack to the allegations now swirling around the papacy. In an article, the official accused The New York Times of faulting the pope unfairly for his treatment of past abuse allegations.

Pope has immunity in abuse trials: Vatican

By Philip Pullella

Quote:
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Benedict, accused by victims' lawyers of being ultimately responsible for a cover-up of sexual abuse of children by priests, cannot be called to testify at any trial because he has immunity as a head of state, a top Vatican legal official said on Thursday.

Quote:
Dalla Torre outlined the Vatican's strategy to defend the pope from being forced to testify in several lawsuits concerning sexual abuse which are currently moving through the U.S. legal system.

Y'know, other heads of state have been put on trial in recent times. Augusto Pinochet and Slobodan Milosevic, for example.

Alternatively, the "statehood" status of the Vatican could be revoked. There is no more reason for the Vatican to be a "state" with sovereign immunity than for NAMBLA to be.

Yes indeed bring back the Catholic style preachers. Anglicanism, or Catholic light:

That schism is long overdue. It's time for the people to say 'whoa, this isn't us. This isn't right' and distance themselves. Not keep supporting the Church.

Pope's preacher: Abuse critique like anti-Semitism

By VICTOR L. SIMPSON, Associated Press Writer

Quote:
VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI's personal preacher on Friday likened accusations against the pope and the Catholic church in the sex abuse scandal to "collective violence" suffered by the Jews.

Yeah, being criticized for protecting pedophiles is JUST LIKE pogroms and the Holocaust. :angryfire:

Cardinal defends pope, denounces "petty gossip"

By Philip Pullella

Quote:
VATICAN CITY, April 4 (Reuters) - A leading cardinal defended Pope Benedict at an unusual address at the pontiff's Easter Sunday Mass, saying the Church would not be intimidated by "petty gossip" about sexual abuse of children by priests.

Quote:
"The people of God are with you and will not let themselves be influenced by the petty gossip of the moment, by the trials that sometimes assail the community of believers," Sodano said.

Quote:
Sodano praised Benedict as the "solid rock" and said "The Church is with you!" to the cheers of thousands of people holding umbrellas in St Peter's Square.

The arrogance of these people is breathtaking.

AP EXCLUSIVE: Future pope stalled pedophile case

By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer

Quote:
LOS ANGELES – The future Pope Benedict XVI resisted pleas to defrock a California priest with a record of sexually molesting children, citing concerns including "the good of the universal church," according to a 1985 letter bearing his signature.

The correspondence, obtained by The Associated Press, is the strongest challenge yet to the Vatican's insistence that Benedict played no role in blocking the removal of pedophile priests during his years as head of the Catholic Church's doctrinal watchdog office.

The letter, signed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was typed in Latin and is part of years of correspondence between the Diocese of Oakland and the Vatican about the proposed defrocking of the Rev. Stephen Kiesle.

I can't wait to hear the excuses and rationalizations for this one.
